CHAPTER THIRTEEN

It took some more talking and convincing, but Staci was able to bring Wanda over to her side. They had to get to the bottom of this. It might have been something Tim overlooked, or even something that could be putting him in danger without him knowing. As powerful as her mentor was, Staci had to admit that he was only a man, and wasn’t perfect; he could make mistakes, too, and it sure felt like he was making one now. The day after the church meeting, Staci met up with Wanda and Seth—Beth was working at the time, which was just as well, since Staci didn’t want her involved in this little rebellion—in order to go over a plan for how to approach the situation. Staci had decided that they would need Seth; he was the best researcher out of the three of them, and would be invaluable in figuring out exactly what was going on with the church that much faster. He didn’t seem to have nearly as many reservations as Wanda had; to Seth, this was just another puzzle to solve.

“Now that we have the Three Amigos assembled . . . what do we actually do?” Wanda was still skeptical and uncomfortable with what they were doing, but she was going along with it. For now, at least. Doesn’t she see that we have to do this? We can’t go to Tim, and I’m definitely not going to Fairgrove. For all we know, they could be behind this; trying to manipulate us so that we accept their “guidance and protection,” falling under their control.

“Preacher Kenny is doing some sort of magic, that much is for sure. I could feel it when he healed that man missing his eye,” Staci said. She retreated to the kitchen, filling up three mugs full of coffee. It wasn’t as good as the coffee at Tim’s, and it felt more than a little illicit meeting at her house instead of at the bookstore, but precautions had to be taken.

“Okay, there’s that. He’s doing magic; healing people. All that we have to go on that something is fishy is that he’s doing magic that we don’t recognize, and Tim has been checking him out again and hasn’t told us. We still don’t have much reason to suspect that he’s doing anything wrong.” Wanda accepted her mug from Staci, blew on the steaming liquid, and took a sip.

“There’s one way we can find out,” Seth piped up, also accepting his mug of coffee. “We could check on the people that he’s healed. See if they’re still okay. I mean, the preacher guy is a jerk, but being a jerk doesn’t mean that you can’t also help people.”

“Well, you know what Tim tells us all the time about magic,” Wanda put in darkly. “There’s always a cost. I don’t see Preacher Kenny paying that price.”

“You’re not wrong; there’s always something that gets used up when magic is happening. And that was major-level healing he was doing; something like when Beth popped for the first time.
